Dr Jingrong Tong
I am a Senior Lecturer in Media and Information Studies at the University of Sheffield. I have worked in the area of journalism and news media since 1999, first as a journalist then as an academic.
My current research focuses on the impact of digital technology on journalism, social media analysis, political, environmental and health communication, with a particular interest in journalism and news/social media in the UK, the US and China.
In my research, I like to talk to people but also like to create knowledge from data. I use qualitative methods, such as interviews, framing analysis and critical discourse analysis, as well as data-driven computational analysis such as social network analysis and computer-assisted discourse analysis.
I have good knowledge of and skills for data collection (scraping), cleaning, analysis and visualisation. Tools I use to process data incude Excel, SPSS, NVivo, Wordsmith, Elasticsearch, Kibana and Gephi as well as programming languages such as Java and Python.
I am a member of the editorial board for Digital Journalism and Journalism Studies. I also serve as Associate Editor for the Chinese Journal of Communication.
I like writing, reading, cinema, running and swimming.
